From time to time people ask me why I have chosen to paint on slates. I had long been seeking something of significance that would add to my pictures. For me, the answer was simple, slate is organic, it has come from within 'sacred earth, it is recycled, and is millions of years old. It has never been my goal to churn out painting after painting [as if on a process line], each piece is an original, and has its own story to tell.
Slate was to fulfill all my criteria. These days it is not always easy to find a material that is both 'natural' and yet by using it, one does no harm to Mother Earth. My quest lead me to 'old' slate. The idea was easy, and yet the reality of finding 'old' slates was to prove very difficult indeed. All the Salvage yards had either 'shut down' or I was told that there was no longer a demand for old slate tiles. Apparently 'composite slate tiles' are in high demand. Inexpensive, these tiles are made from 'dust,debris and other materials' and have a 'look' of slate for a far less costly outlay. But to me, these tiles looked somehow 'fake' and 'souless'. They had no undulations and flowing texture which bore testimony to their time within the earth.
It was not easy to source old slates, but with a good measure of 'luck' and the help of friends I was able to find a small quantity of Victorian slate, and this set me on the road to slate painting. Since that time, I have been fortunate enough to find another small supply of them, and I treasure them, as I do not know when the next quantity will manifest.
So there you have it, I paint on slate because it is 'old', 'from the earth' because it is 'organic', because it has 'history', because it is 'recycled' and because it is an exquisite medium on which to paint.

The Orb Faerie
Painted in oils and acrylics on a Victorian slate panel with holes by which to hang this 'one of a kind' picture.
Here a faerie hovers in the air, all around her are orbs of pure energy and love. A wise and ancient tree spirit surveys the scene, awakened by his friend and mentor ~ the Orb Faerie. In the foreground a group of magical mushrooms are in evidence, a sure sign of the presence of faeries.

The Wizard Sojourn
One of a kind Oils and Acrylics on Victorian slate panel, with two holes to provide a means of hanging the painting.
As light fades a lone wizard sets forth towards his homeland. He pauses momentarily to seek the counsel of an old and treasured friend, the Tree Spirit Ashunam. Clasped in his hand he holds his staff of office with Dragon insignia.
