For as long as I can remember I have had a love of trees in all their rich diversity. Even as a child I saw and believed that within each tree there was a 'life force', a 'spirit' with which we could communicate.
Year later I learned of the Dryads of Greek mythology, the Green Ladies of English folklore, the Moss Maidens of Germanic Folktales, and the Standing People [an American Indian term used to refer to trees and their energies]. The fact that other peoples had written about, or indeed believed as I do, was both compelling and thrilling to me.
Even today, all around my home are artefacts made from natural wood, be it carved, painted or whatever else takes my fancy. It was therefore a very easy decision for me to embark on a journey that would see me start working with all different types of timber. As I am not skilled at woodcarving, others can do this far better than me, I decided that I should paint on wood. I liked the idea of working with and painting on this 'organic life force'.
As I strongly believe in caring for our environment and sustainability,
my next challenge was sourcing suitable timber on which to paint [I have no desire to contribute to deforestation]. Luckily a carpenter was found who had quantities of local timber. Using age old techniques of forest management and constantly planting new saplings to replace those that are used, he found himself with an abundant supply of off-cuts. He was reluctant to throw them away, and did not know what to do with them. My problem was solved. I had now found a source of timber that was both sustainable and would do no harm to the environment.
I chose to have the timber fashioned into wood rings on which I could paint. I liked the idea of a 'ring', a circular type of shape, it has such spiritual significance, the spiral of life, the medicine wheel, the unbroken path. It seemed to me that this notion added something else to the paintings I was about to do. Our wood rings can be laid flat on an altar or wherever appeals to you, in the alternative you may wish to put a small hook in the back of the timber and place the painting on a wall.
Each painted wood ring is in either oils, acrylics and gouache, or just gouache, and is sealed with an evironment friendly finishing coat in either matt or satin. We offer a range of wood rings for sale on a wide range of themes, from Wizards and Faeries to Wolves and Eagles, and more besides. If however you would like to commission a particular theme for a wood ring, please do not hesitate to email me. No additional charge is incurred for commissions.
