Colour has a huge impact on our lives and can even affect our moods and behaviour. Yet we live in a time where many of us pay little attention to the importance of 'colour' in our daily lives. Yet in the animal kingdom most, if not all four legged and two legged creatures are highly atuned to the significance of colour in their environment. Colours can indicate danger, sexual availability, food, prey, predator, or friend... But as we dress ourselves each day, or decorate our homes, do we pay due regard to the impact that the colours we have chosen will have on our health and well being?

Studies have shown that some people who have been blind from birth can recognise colour, it is believed that they are able to rely on other highly developed senses and detect the vibration of any given colour in their surroundings. So colour does affect us, even if we are not particularly aware of it. Look at how our language incorporates many colours in descriptive ways to elaborate on a situation or state of mind, someone has the blues, red flag to a bull, green with envy and so on... These descriptions are enshrined in our language, yet day to day many of us pay little heed to the impact that colour will have on our health and well being.

When working with colour energies you may find the following definitions helpful. There are of course numerous interpretations of colours and their impact on our health and well being, these are guidelines only.

WHITE associated with 'purity' and 'enlightenment', regarded as being without blemish and restful and calm. As with any colour there are negative associations, the colour white can be regarded as rather 'cold', 'barren', 'sterile'.

GREY The colour grey combines white and black. In its positive context grey is regarded as offering peace and neutrality. In its more negative context grey is held to show indecision, doubt, and an air of invisibility or fading into the background.

BLACK A colour that in its positive context offers magic, mystique, allure, protection and strong sense of self. Black however can be associated with grief and loss, alienation, loss of energy and thirst for life, and can also seem cold and repellant.

BROWN The colour of the Earth, brown offers us grounding, The expression 'back down to Earth' is highly apt for the energy of this colour may be said to offer us a reality check and help us to keep our feet firmly on the ground. As with any colour brown has negative assocations, it is a colour that can be regarded as drab, dull, depressing and too grounding.

RED Associated with passion and love, red is a colour that offers us a zest for life, courage, good fortune, and energy. In its negative context red can indicate danger, overactivity and anger. People who are prone to anger quickly, may wish to avoid wearing the colour red. It is said that the energies of this colour can speed up the heartbeat and heighten the blood pressure, hence those of a fiery disposition may not find benefit from wearing this colour.

ORANGE A colour again associated with energy, creativity, inspiration, and getting the job done. In its negative context orange can be regarded as harsh, unwelcoming and alienating.

YELLOW Associated with the Sun, and therefore masculine energies, yellow is linked to the intellect, reasoning, vibrancy and playfulness. Yellow in its negative context may be linked to 'thinking too much', worrying, and holding on to 'emotional baggage'.

GREEN The colour of many growing things on Mother Earth. The energy of this colour is said to bring balance to mind, body and spirit, also said to have strong links to Mother Nature, and is associated with good fortune, and prosperity. In its negative context green can be associated with envy, greed, selfishness and lack of self esteem.

BLUE The colour of the sky and oceans. A wonderfully calming colour, associated with healing, psychic awareness protection and communication. In its negative context blue may be thought of as cold and unwelcoming, depressing, and drab. For those of a fiery disposition it is said wearing the colour blue may be beneficial as it is believed that this colour energy can slow the heartbeat and lower blood pressure.

PURPLE A colour that is sometimes associated with monarchy, and high status clergy. This is a colour strongly linked to spiritual awareness and awakening, discovering oneself, and finding or increasing our faith. In its negative context purple may be regarded as isolating and eccentric.

PINK A combination of the colours red and white, as with any colour that is blended with white, pink can be a calming and restful colour associated with the 'feminine'. This colour is linked to unconditional love. In its more negative context pink can be regarded as 'sickly', over indulgent, feminine, eccentric.

TURQUOISE The energies of this colour are said to be healing and rejuvenating, whilst in its negative context turquoise may be regarded as 'too intense', and 'attention grabbing'.
