We are all connected, a lesson for Freya and Frodo

Inside the base of a Giant Redwood Tree, Pollyanna sat waiting patiently for the last of her students to arrive. All around her was the excited and happy chatter of faeries of all ages and sizes. Inside this most sacred and ancient of trees, the walls groaned with the history of thousands of years. Rows of Toadstool tables were arranged in ever bigger circles around the space, with chairs made of silken Spider's webs and Pine cones, on which sat the restless Faeries.

Pollyanna [Polly to her friends and family] was the oldest and wisest of those present, a Master/Teacher, and at a mere two thousand years of age, was still considered quite young in faerie years. Respected and loved by all who knew her, Polly had a gentle grace and kindness that could warm the coldest of hearts.

The lesson of the day had been well prepared - 'How to make invisible repairs to Faerie Wings, and enhance their natural beauty'. Polly had been busy promoting the event for some time, and Butterflies had been busy for two Moon Cycles, posting details of the class to the Flower Lantern letterboxes of all the faeries of the Four Kingdoms.

Infanta Bella Borgia was to be Teaching Assistant for the day's lesson, she was known for her exotic beauty, and was admired by many male suitors of the four kingdoms and beyond. Her eyes were liquid pools of swirling amber, her long black hair glinted with shimmering red tones, and flowed well down below her slender knees. Her gown, woven from the silk of Glow Worms in shades of red, orange, cream, white, brown and black, had been created by Elmcoonia Creations, a thriving faerie costume making business, held in high regard throughout the Four Kingdoms. The Raccoon tailors and costumiers of Elmcoonia made their homes and their workplaces within the mighty Elm Trees of the Third Kingdom. Their faerie clothing being highly prized for its high degree of creative flair and imaginative use of colour, and the recycling of natural materials.

A sudden flash of light, and the last two faeries tumbled and giggled their way into the Redwood room. Late as always. The first was Frodo Fru Fru Llamalugs, Son of Nacre and Prince of the 3rd Kingdom. shorter than his companion, he had a lion's mane of fur-like cream and white hair, and skin that glistened like the finest pearls of the South Seas. Dressed all in white, his eyes were perhaps his most noticeable feature, a soft, warm brown, and almond in shape, tilted slightly upwards at their outermost edge. As his eyes twinkled and sparkled, all the faerie maidens in the room fluttered their wings and smiled, cooing and giggling their admiration. The second faerie, and Frodo's dearest friend, was Freya Kitty Jay Furminator of the 3rd Kingdom, and daughter of Brenhel, third daughter of Favrile, the First Faerie of Narwhalia... She fluttered about the room, her fiery red hair tumbled untidily down onto her shoulders, her olive green eyes matched the colour of her hand spun spider silk tunic, in shades of of Oak Green, with Acorn embroidery across the scooped neckline.

Reluctantly Freya and Frodo had sat themselves down, but almost at once they had become distracted by the animal paintings, small and large, that were dotted around the room. They began to laugh and smirk at one another and the paintings seemed to cause the pair great merriment. Already late, Pollyanna could take no more, [even if Frodo Fru Fru was her son], she called all the group to attention - with a firm tap of her wand upon the twisted Hazel table in front of her. What she was to do next was to take everyone by surprise.

Polly spoke the Awakening Leaf Charm Spell. Within moments the long, gnarled and branched arm of the Giant Redwood Tree reached through the door of the chamber and placed a number of leaves upon the twisted Hazel desk in front of Polly. All around her no faerie moved nor spoke a word, all eyes were fixed on Polly. On each leaf was a beautifully painted portrait of an animal from planet Earth. They were not rare like the Cloud Leopards of Borneo, or the wild Pandas of China, and Freya and Frodo thought the creatures most ordinary and boring [much like the paintings around the walls of the room].

Pollyanna smiled and opened the Book of Faerie Wisdom and History [1st edition] that lay before her, and began to read out loud, her words seeming to dance around the room and captivate her audience. "Seen and unseen" she said, "throughout all the ages of humankind on Mother Earth, faeries and their kin have worked tirelessly to preserve the balance between all living things". She continued "It has always been our goal to maintain this delicate energy that exists in all things - for the good of all". "No landscape is more important than another, no ocean is more important than any stream, no mountain is more special than any hill or mound of earth. So too, all the four legged, two legged, winged and finned creatures of the earth, each has a vital part to play in the web and tapestry of life". Is the Whale more important than the Krill on which it feeds? she asked, looking directly at Frodo and Freya. As she spoke she would gently touch her wand to a leaf and the painted image upon it would come to life and appear within the Redwood room. One by one all manner of creatures emerged.

Very gently Polly closed her book and slowly looked around the room until her eyes rested upon Freya and Frodo, she carried on talking. "These creatures you see before you may be familiar to you, you may even think them 'boring and ordinary', but no life force is more important than another, life is a chain, all on Mother Earth is 'connected', we are all 'one'. "So do not look unkindly on the dog, the cat, the rabbit, the giraffe, they are just as magical and wondrous as the cloud leopards of Borneo. It is the faerie way to respect all life, preserve life, to celebrate difference and embrace the things that we have in common". With that, she tapped her wand and all the creatures turned back into leaves. She smiled at Freya and Frodo, she knew they understood and would never again mock the creatures they had once thought 'ordinary'.

So it was that Freya and Frodo learned a very important lesson that day, and they also acquired a new skill - 'how to repair faerie wings and enhance their natural beauty'.

'There is a way that nature speaks, that land speaks. Most of the time we are simply not patient enough, not quiet enough, to pay attention to the story'.
Linda Hogan, Poet and Novelist.
